Conservation Areas in Fife

Fife Council

Fife has some of the best surviving examples of vernacular architecture in Scotland and this is reflected in the high number of Conservation Areas (47) that have been designated in Fife. East has the greatest number of Conservation Areas (26), followed by Central (12) and then West Area (9).

Coastal towns and villages are particularly well represented given Fife's extensive coastline. The best examples of historic townscapes are designated as being outstanding. Within the Conservation Areas there are more stringent controls over development and where an Article 4 has been imposed, this places greater restrictions on what development can take place without the need for permission.

Development Services operates Town Scheme Grants in a number of outstanding Conservation Areas to assist with restoration and repairs to property.  We also manage Conservation Area Regeneation Schemes which are currently running in Dysart, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy.

To find out if you live in a Conservation Area
see the related document 'List of Conservation Areas in Fife', which lists them and identifies those classified as being 'outstanding' by Fife Council and Historic Scotland. The table also shows those conservation areas that are covered or partially covered by Article 4 Directions. Further related documents will show you a  map of each Conservation Area.
