BUILDINGS in Kirkcaldy High Street have been cleaned up as part of a three week project, which has involved clearing rhones which have become overgrown with buddleia and self seeded vegetation.
The work is being carried out by Fife Council and funded by the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) at no cost to the owners. The work has been undertaken by Building Services from hydraulic platforms over the last three Sundays (ending 8 November)
Matthew Price, Kirkcaldy CARS Officer, said: “There are important consequences in neglecting this basic maintenance, not only in terms of the effect on the attractiveness of the High Street but ultimately it may result in serious damage to Kirkcaldy’s build heritage and a potential risk to public safety.”
Councillor Alice Soper, Chair of Kirkcaldy Area Committee, said: “This has been a worthwhile project which will benefit Kirkcaldy’s High Street and help to improve the attractiveness of the High Street and create a pleasing environment for all those who live, work and visit it. By investing in the maintenance of our historic buildings, this will help to boost vibrancy of the town centre.
“I would also encourage building owners to get in touch to see how they can tap into funding such as the shop front improvement scheme.”
CARS is a five year project and funding will be used in four key areas, to:
- Provide grants to renovate individual or groups of historic buildings
- Provide grants to businesses to improve their shopfronts
- Carry out improvements to wynds and closes
- Provide information and training for the repair and care of traditional buildings
The clean up project has taken place in advance of National Maintenance Week, organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Building, which runs from 20th - 27th November.
